Earthquake Shakes Several Regions of Indonesia, Residents Panic and Flee

Jakarta, October 13, 2024 – An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck several regions of Indonesia early this morning, causing widespread panic among residents. The tremors were felt in parts of Java, Sumatra, and Bali, prompting people to rush out of their homes in fear of aftershocks or building collapses.

According to the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of the earthquake was located off the coast of West Java, at a depth of 30 kilometers. The quake was strong enough to be felt in major cities like Jakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta.

Residents' Reactions

Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as people fled buildings, abandoning their belongings. "I was asleep when I felt the bed shaking violently. I grabbed my kids and ran outside," said Lina, a resident of Bandung. Similar accounts have been shared from residents across different cities, with many spending hours outside due to fear of aftershocks.

Videos circulating on social media show large crowds gathered in open spaces, including parks and streets, as people sought safety from potential building collapses. In Jakarta, traffic jams occurred as people tried to evacuate from high-rise buildings.

Damage and Injuries

So far, there have been reports of minor damage to buildings, including cracked walls and broken windows, but no major destruction has been confirmed. Authorities are currently assessing the situation and coordinating with local governments to evaluate the extent of the damage. The number of injuries remains unclear, but hospitals in the affected areas are on high alert for potential casualties.

Warnings and Precautions

BMKG has issued a warning for residents to remain cautious of aftershocks, as smaller tremors often follow a large earthquake. The agency has not issued a tsunami warning, as the earthquake was deemed unlikely to trigger underwater landslides or other phenomena capable of causing large waves.

Authorities have urged people to avoid panic and to follow official instructions through local emergency broadcasts and updates from the government. Search and rescue teams are on standby in case further assistance is needed in heavily affected areas.

A History of Earthquakes

Indonesia, located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is highly prone to earthquakes due to the convergence of several tectonic plates. The region experiences frequent seismic activity, and many residents are accustomed to small tremors. However, the unpredictability of larger quakes often leaves people on edge, especially in densely populated urban areas.

As the situation continues to develop, residents are reminded to stay calm and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
